Can I new my Malaysian passport without having MyKad

Question

I have been studying in Taiwan for the past decade or so, and haven't been back to Malaysia for about five years. I do not have my new MyKad yet. Is MyKad a prerequisite to renew my passport? I would be traveling back to Malaysia tomorrow (8/5). I cannot wait for a month for my MyKad in Malaysia because I am a graduate student and I need to come back to Taiwan to do my research. Is the old ID still used nowadays?

as i know u need to fill in forms and pass them your passport, your IC is just for them to see.....the Passport is just 24 hours and u can get ur new passport. But is there any M'sia embassy in Taiwan, u may be able to renew there - just check it out with them

But in the same time u should renew your myKad too, if not the penalty is heavy
