  1. It sounds like the "STICKY" may be residue from whatever, unless it once had contact paper over? Which would still be defined as residue. Is the masonite tempered? Do you possibly know?

      The issue with primer would be acceptable, but I suggest you understand WHAT the sticky is first, and try to resolve that.

      Kilz and Zinser, both make quality primers, in both oil and water bases. Not knowing at all your intent, after the fact, it might help us to know, with regard to the paint formulation you intend as a finish.

  2. what you need to do is use killz2 premium primer, it will adhear to any surface no matter how slick it is..i would recommend the latex primer because it is cleaner and has less of an odor, you can pick it up at any hardware store for about $17. after that paint away!

  3. Yes you can. Just clean it with a degreaser just in case it had any residue on it. Then use a good gripping primer such as #1 suggested Kilz or Zinseer.  PURRFECT!
