We began staining our kitchen cabinets today. Half the cabinets have already been stained. I realize that I hate the stain. It darkerens the room much too much. I want to paint over it. Can I do that? And will they look any different from the ones that haven't been stained yet?

  1. I did my cabinets and I would recommend a light sanding and then use an oil base primer I used KILZ then use an oil base enamel paint. I also added some penetrol to the paint which slows the dry time down and gives you a slicker more wet like finish. Everyone that see my cabinets loves them.

  2. Sherwin Williams makes a low VOC environmentally friendly paint with almost no odor.  You always want to stay with latex paints.  Oil paints should be done by pro's and you should leave the house...very toxic.  You have to prime the cabinets and talk to the paint store rep. to find exactly what you need.

You can also get $5 sample quarts of paint from Sherwin Williams in the event you are not sure of the color you want.  Saves you lots of $$$ on colors that you think you like until they are on.  Good luck.

  3. The stain will bleed through water base paint and/or primer.  Use an oil base primer or shellac to seal before painting them.

  4. Prime them, and paint. Use latex if u want.

  5. OK so here it is.....

If you used a Water based stain(most of which a homeowner would choose are) you would use a latex based paint to cover the cabinets.

You do want to prime them.  this is a fundemental step in painting that helps create a better painting surface and it also seals the surface, which will save you paint in the long run.

  6. Is their a shine of any sort on the stained cabinets?  If so, sand them.  To paint cabinets and not have the paint chip off you MUST prime them first with a primer.  Its alot of work but, after you prime them give them 2-3 coats of paint.  I did mine 10 years ago and they look great.  I did them off white and it brightened up my kitchen greatly.  Also, paint the insides of the cabinet too, it makes them brighter when you open up the door and you can find things more easily.

  7. Absolutely..

I had the same problem.  Whilst I love natural wood, mine were far too dark. I sandpapered them down, and then applied a couple of white undercoat. (My friend tells me that shed has used matt emulsion, says it was cheaper and just as effective.)

Finally, paint the top coat in whatever colour/finish you wish.

    Happy decorating..
