Hello everyone, just wondering can I pay a cheque into my bank accout that is in my maiden name. I am married and I use both names as I did not change it on unimportant things, but my bank accout is in my married name.

Thanks in advance

  1. You might need to bring your marriage certificate to the bank, as a way of proving your identity, but they should be able to do it.

  2. I think so, because your maiden name is still your legal name.  It might be best to take the check directly to a teller though rather than depositting it into a machine.

  3. make the change to one or the other.  it simplifies everything.

  4. possibly, but you may evidence of your maiden name on an official document, maybe even a photo

  5. Yes but you will need some form of photo ID from both names just so they can check that its you etc. So basically your old drivers licence and your new one, or the same for a passport!

  6. Yes Katrina you can.  You must have provided proof of your wedding by submitting a copy of your Marriage Certificate but the Bank will know who you are as they have a record of both names.

  7. check

  8. you can if you send a copy of your marrage certificate

  9. Yes, as long as there are sufficient funds in the account to cover the check

  10. Yes, you can do that.  Sign with the maiden name as middle.

You should change all things to your new name including the "unimportant" things.

  11. Yes, you can.  I received a check in my maiden name after I got married and was able to deposit it.  Just ask the bank teller how to endorse it.  You'll probably have to sign your maiden name with your married name underneath.

  12. @ Morgan, cheque is the Canadian/UK way to spell check. Anyways, you should probably bring proof of your marriage and your maiden name just to be safe.

  13. I was able to recently in my bank, I took in my marriage certificate and passport, the bank took copies of both.

I was told the clearing centre might refuse the cheque and it might take longer to clear.

It did take a day longer but it wasn't an issue.

That was Natwest bank by the way & I have been married 4 years and one thing had to slip through the name changing net!

  14. A lot of things have changed since 911 and banks are much more strict on deposits.  For example, if you wanted to deposit an account into your own account, but you have no ID and you do not have your ATM card the bank should nott allow it to happen.

If a relative wanted to deposit into your account, they would need to know your banking number, not your pin, and they would have to have ID.  As far as using your maiden name, you can deposit the check into the account with your new name.  One thing you could do is write "Pay to the order of ________" (and insert your name that is on the account)  on the back of the check where you typically sign.  The bank shoudl then take your check no matter what.

  15. If you take a copy of your marriage certificate, it shouldn't be a problem - I did it the other way around and they cashed the cheque no problem.
