I have a prodigy 10 ft recreational kayak. If I try to roll without a skirt, I think it would fill with water.

  1. You're right that you need a skirt.  I don't know the extent of your rolling experience, but chances are, if you're hanging out upside-down in a lake or river, you're going to fill up with water. Use a skirt.  Rec boat skirts aren't that expensive. I have one at home I'd be glad to sell you.  I used it to learn how to pull the grab loop and wet exit as I was getting into whitewater.  When you pick up your skirt, don't forget to grab a couple of float bags for your stern.  Otherwise you'll sadly wave goodbye as you watch it sink to the bottom of the lake.

  2. Can you do a roll with a skirt? If so, you probably can get the boat up if it doesn't have a skirt. Try some rolls in shallow water without the skirt. Next problem: What to do with the water in the kayak. Your kayak and you will be really unstable! Recommendation...install flotation devices in front of the kayak foot blocks and behind your seat. Carry a huge sponge next to your seat or under the seat. Carry a bailing device on the other side of the seat. Question? Why no skirt?

  3. Yes you can roll a kayak without a skirt. In sea kayaking there is a maneouver called re-entry&roll, where you get into an upturned sea kayak and then roll up. Most people put the spray skirt on after the roll (those with good lungs can do it before rolling).

The effect is that the kayak is about half full of water and needs to be emptied. Sea kayaks tend to have pumps on them to do that. A hand pump will do but it is hard work on your arms trying to empty the cockpit.
