Question:

Can I place objects on top of electronics?

In regards to electronics (computers, TVs, DVD players, etc.), is it okay to place objects (such as remotes, manuals, disc cases, etc.) on top of them?

Specifically, I mean with regard to static electricity, or ESD. It seems like it's something very normal that people do, but people also seem to claim that ESD will be a hazard no matter what kind of material you're dealing with.

In addition, if ESD is such an issue, then what about portable electronics, such as laptops, portable DVD players, cell phones, mp3 players, PSPs, etc.?

You always handle portable electronics with your hands and are always walking around and creating friction with your feet. So why isn't broken electronics of the portable variety ever an issue if ESD is such a hazard?

  1. Most electronics are shielded or grounded to be able to hand electro static discharge, but I have had a dvd player fail after receiving a shock from a TV screen, when I was touching both arranging my entertainment center. I will just say its probably ok, but it can, very rarely, cause problems.

  2. As long as you don't restrict air flow (by covering vents), you can put anything you want on top of a device. Most metal covers are grounded and it is not uncommon to use plastic or other material.

  3. Normally we all keep these things on PC or DVD etc and still we are using it perfectly but as a matter pf fact its not recommanded to have them because of static field created by them and that may hinder in the performance.Second part is that yes all the electronic goods prodcues the static electricity but all are with in the permissible limit. So buddy dont worry on all those things but try not to keep your credit cards or the things which you have mentioned above on electronics devices.
