Can I plant my garlic cloves?

I have cloves of garlic bought from the grocery store that have begun to sprout. If I plant them will garlic grow?

  1. Yes, and if you live somewhere with cold winters, mulch them through the winter then dig them up in late spring.

    Sometimes potatoes from the store have chemicals on them to prevent sprouting, and some garlic may, also, so just be aware of that. Buy organic garlic and you're home free.


  2. I can grow anything, but that trick did not work. Your best bet is to buy seeds from a nursery.

  3. Yes they will grow. Many use this rule of thumb and plant on the shortest day and harvest on the longest day.

    Everything that grows has seasons, and requirements.  No bananas will grow in Alaska.  No wheat will grow in Colombia.  Get it?

    So without the details, we are flummoxed!.  Sorry.

  5. Yes, you can plant them in a vegetable garden. Just don't plant them too deep. You don't want to bury the whole clove, just about the bottom 1/3 of it.
