  1. The first guy is wrong component cables are green, blue, and red all are video but show different colors there are no white and yellow connections for component cables. For sound you must use the rca cables (red and white) (good soud quality), a digital sound cable (better sound quality), or the best is an optical soud cable (best sound quality).

Composite is red (sound), white(sound), and yellow(video)

    This is your standard connection.

HDMI is both video and sound (same quality as component video cables and optical sound)

  2. Both of my BluRay and HD-DVD players offer component as well as HDMI out for high def.

BUT: when playing standard def DVD's - only using the HDMI connection will the players up-convert the image. It's not as good as a true BluRay/HD disk, but it's nice to have.

  3. Yes you can. As a matter of fact, I use a component cable for my PS3 when watching blu-rays. I find HDMI to display a darker picture on my particular TV. Don't confuse component and composite. Component has yellow, white, and red in addition to another red, blue, and green. Composite is just standard definition yellow (video), and red and white (audio). Same goes for HD-DVD.
