Can I play a European ps1 game on my ps2?

I just purchased a hard to find ps1 game online, but I realized the game is European. Can my U.S. ps2 still be able to play a European game? If not would there be any sort of "upgrade" I could purchase so I could play the game?

It won't play it because of the region-lock issue. You can install modchip or use Swap Magic kit to take care of this.
