Can I play basketball in college without playing in high school?

I left highschool to get my G.E.D, Now I want to play college basketball but I'm not looking for a scholarship. I contacted a local community college basketball coach and he advised me to start in a local rec league. I am 17 years old and am 6ft 1/2''. Working on my conditioning.
