I know that I can access 5.1 dolby digital surround sound on the bd menu but when I do, nothing happens. I know that everything is hooked up correctly because my ps3 games play in dolby digital but when I put in a blu-ray movie, it will not. What may be the problem because it is frustrating me. Thanks for your time.

  1. What type of cable are you using? If your using HDMI for audio, then you will want to use optical. HDMI only has PCM audio and most reciever out there can only do 2.1 PCM audio. Under bluray audio settings, also make sure PCM is not selected (not sure if this setting is under bluray setting but if it is then change it to bitstream). Good luck

  2. check it on it's website well it should work

  3. Is it that your receiver isn't detecting 5.1 evidenced by it's display? Or are you not hearing 5.1 when you play a disk?

If the receiver doesn't detect it, try the menu settings on the PS3.

If you are just wondering why you don't hear the rear speakers the same way you do on a game, it may be working and just not putting anything out the rear at the moment. Some engineers use surround very sparingly.

    Edit:

Then it's a pretty safe bet that the trouble is in the PS3. You use the same optical connection for games and DVDs I would guess, so check settings on the game machine. Also, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. The DVDs are outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 or it's sometimes called AC3. If your games output the same signal and your settings are correct, it's beyond me. Might have to speak with Sony.
