I have a computer set up with DSL modem and all the hookups in my room upstairs. But I want to hook up another computer - it is old (Millenium Edition) but just use it for internet only. There is no way to hook it up to wireless so I would have to have it on wired. SO --- can I plug the ethernet cable into the phone jack and the other end to the computer and have internet with no router or modem?

  1. No Telephone jacket will not work unless your internet connection is VoIP. There difference between two cable

regular telephone cable four pins and ethernet pins has eight pins. It will not go in to jacket.

I strongly recommend to go and buy wireless router this will solve your problem with connecting two or more computers together. It is not hard to setup wireless router. CD will provide instructions on how to setup the router. And Follow these steps.

    Buy Switch or  Wireless Router

You will only need one ethernet cable wired from modem

Modem < Router < PC (Wireless Card)

    Modem < Switch < PCs

Modem < Wireless (Wall Jacket-Power Jacket on the wall) < PC ( cable connected from Wall Jacket-Power Jacket on the wall)

  2. No. it wouldn't fit and it wouldn't work if you made it fit. Ethernet is bigger than phone jack.

Ethernet uses 8 pins, phone jack uses 2.

    Use common sence.

  3. You don't have an ethernet signal on the phone line, you have voice and DSL - neither of which means anything to the ethernet card in that computer.

  4. No.

  5. It is possible to do this only with additional technology. It's not cheap and some people don't like it because it could let other people use your internet and potentially get access to your computers.

It's called Ethernet over Power (Internet over Power? Can't remember for certain), and it's not widely available. SBC/AT&T sells this equipment though.

I would suggest buying a wireless router instead. You have no option but to buy a router if you want to use more than one computer at once. It's more understood if you ever have trouble, and it might even cost less.

    Sorry for the bad news.

  6. no u can't do that. U must have a home networking router to connect two PC's
