I've heard this is actually against the law. It costs so much money to be added to his insurance. It seems that if it is illegal then, its an extortionate trip to a driving school.

  1. Only on private property.

  2. i don't know about where you live but here i think you can, but no one would because if you're in an accident beause you were driving and not your dad, the insurance wouldn't cover it, so it'd be kind of stupid t.  if your dad's in the car though, over here it'd be fine

  3. If neither yourself or your Dad know the answer to this, I don't think that either of you should be driving!

If you have a large area of private property and have the landowners permission, then you do not need to be insured - but if you mean driving on public roads, you do.

If you plan on passing the driving test, you will need quite a bit of experience driving in traffic - and while it would appear that driving lessons are expensive, you are paying the instructor for his or her time, the use of their car, road fuel, the cost of their road tax and the cost of their insurance - which for them will be extremely high considering that they take out novice drivers and risk their car being damaged.

Lots of drivers also develop bad driving habits - the trip the the driving school is the best option and is far more likely to be cost effective.  Your Dad may well be a good driver but would he really like to pass a driving test now?  Some driving schools guarantee for a fixed fee that they will get you through the driving test - lots of failed tests via Dad's instruction could cost a lot more!

Ask your Dad to get quotes for having you included on his insurance - it will be useful for you to be able to gain experience once you have had a few basic lessons - and once you have passed, well, you will still need insurance if you plan to continue driving and it will with a lot of companies count towards your own no-claims bonus.

    Good luck!

  4. Only on private land mate.

  5. I have tried it myself, here is some good informations.http://car-insurance.online-tips.info/ca...

  6. As someone has already said you can drive with him or on your own on private property only.

  7. Only if you are added to the insurance (which will be as you say, expensive),

  8. its not actually that expensive. you just get your name added to his insurance. a cheaper alternative is to hire a dual control car. u can get them from arnold clark. that way the insurance is covered and u wont have to worry about that. i hired a dual controlled car and believe me it helped alot! was only £9 an hour when i did that a couple yrs ago.

  9. NO WAY can you drive without insurance! You want a ban before you even get your test!??

  10. lol well i guess you better ask your dad....Hew will tell you

  11. Yes, as above, you CAN drive on private land - you don't need liability insurance.

  12. Yes it depends on your dads insurance cover.  And I don't think you can  ,  Learning to drive is a very expensive business now  .  Anything up to a  thousand pounds   .. Perhaps you could practice  but not on public highway ... I taught my boys in the car park of a big factory  after everyone had gone home,  but they still did school lessons before their tests,Both  passed first time.

  13. I'm assuming you're in the UK. If so, the answer is NO.

You could be prosecuted for driving without insurance. Your dad's insurance would not be valid while you were driving so if you had an accident the insurance company would refuse to cover any damage. Your dad could also be prosecuted and get points on his licence or a fine or a suspension or all of these.

It is better to be taught by a professional instructor anyway. No disrespect to your dad, I'm sure he's a very good driver but he may not be completely up-to-date on the latest developments and driving practises.

Sorry: The people who are under the impression that it is OK to drive on private property without insurance are mistaken. The person in charge of the vehicle is still liable for any damage or injury caused. If they do not have public liability insurance covering them for any injury they cause to a third party they could end up paying out for the rest of their life. Insurance companies do not pay out on uninsured risks. If they are forced to cover a claim by the courts, they will try to recover their money.

  14. Yes it is against the law there is no place where you can drive without insurance. There is only one option if you found a very cheap car insurance company and get insured. Have a look for a quote at the link below they are really very cheap.

    Best of luck!!

  15. You need to be insured as a named driver under your dad's policy.

  16. Yes as you nrightly say legally you have to get your name added as a Learner Driver to his insurance Policy and that will mean his premium will go up. Once your name has been accepted then you can drive OK but must have L plates up until you pass your tests.
