I currently have directv. I am looking into purchasing a few more hd boxes or dvrs. Can I purchase and use my own recievers. I have five boxes in my house, and they charge me five dollars a box per month to rent. If I buy my own, will I still have to pay those fees? Thanks

  1. Yes, you will pay the $4.99, but as a separate fee called an Additional Receiver Fee.

Essentially, they're the same thing. Instead of charging you for all of your programming for each and every receiver (Weeder, I would hate to be you in that scenario), they only charge you $4.99 for each separate one regardless of lease or owned status.

The difference between a leased and owned receiver, though, is when the receivers are disconnected.

If it's leased and your account is turned off you're required to return it to DirecTV whereas you can do whatever you want with an owned one.

If the receiver is replaced under the Protection Plan, the owned receiver is replaced with another owned one (thus no additional commitment) but you have to return the faulty one. A leased receiver is replaced with a leased receiver and upon activation you agree to an 18- or 24-month commitment on the account. (note: if you do not have the Protection Plan, all receivers are replaced with leased ones and have the commitment).

  2. Yes, you will still have to pay the $4.99 a month.  I feel your pain as I have 8 boxes.

EDIT: Laura, you're correct, it does suck, but I wouldn't trade my DirectTV for anything.  It's a little expensive if you get a lot of stuff, but man!  I get NFL Ticket every year, ESPN Gameday, March Madness and all the interactive stuff id cool too.  Heck, even for free we got The Masters on 4 channels in HD!

Plus 95 more HD channels.....Man, I love it.

  3. What you're paying is a connection fee, not rent.
