Question:

Can I put a 9 foot surfboard on my car?

I know the question sounds a little silly so let me explain. I'm just starting to learn how to surf and I want to buy a longboard. What I don't know is if it will fit on my car (which is 14' long with a 4'8" long roof). Also I would be using roof straps. Does anyone know how to handle this, or should I look at just buying a shorter board?

  1. Sure, just buy a set off soft racks.  I use 'em all the time for my 9' board.

  2. it might stick out the trunk a lot but.... ya

  3. Well, probably on it, not in it. Don't buy a surfboard because of the size of your car. Buy a surfboard that matches your size, skill level, and local breaks.

There are lots of good cartop racks available. There are both hard racks (rain gutter style and the like) and soft racks, which do a great job of car-topping big surfboards.

Don't forget, once upon a time, there were only longboards, and we carried 'em all over the place on top of our cars. I had a '67 Impala SS, with surfboard racks on top, and lots of times, I would haul six guys and their 8 and 9 foot boards around.

Go to your local surf shop. talk the the industry professionals there. They will help you find the right racks for you car and your stick.

  4. yes you can

  5. I've seen it done all the time, make sure you strap it in really tight, and its up to you whether you want to leave the fins on or not (if its removable.)  So the answer is yes, you can do it.

  6. yes you can attach the board to the luggage rack. just he sure to tie it down good.

  7. actually, me and my friend tried this with his longboard in his mom's tiny Scion - it fit!  You just gotta put down the back seats and since the front passenger usually doesn't go down all the way, lay it down and put the board over it.  It'll fit, (maybe not in a coupe) but the board has to be literally from the trunk to the dashboard, and that only leaves space for 2 people in the car.... roof racks are easier.

  8. yes you can for sure you just have to be careful...put it in a board bag and attach it to your roof rack and make sure it's on good you might want to put a red tag at the end just in case...idk cops are looking out on that now

  9. Yes, I used to do it all the time. You don't need a luggage rack. Buy a soft surfboard rack and make sure that thing is strapped on so tight that it doesn't wobble at 60mph+. Make sure the fin end is at the front area of the car and the board is balanced on top. If you really want to feel safer, buy 2 extra long surfboard straps with your soft surf rack and wrap it around the board (front and back area) and tie the strap also under the roof inside your car all the way around super tight. I have a small compact 2 door car and it stayed on real well on the freeway. Make sure to have a friend who surfs take a look at the way you do it before even entering a freeway though. Be safe buddy and don't worry about those jerks on the surfline who think they're the ish. Stay away from them because they have mental issues. Enjoy yourself and remember that surfing should be always be fun and if it feels like it's not, just come back the next day. Start on small waves and avoid sharp reefy areas.

  10. Yes you can. I do it all the time. I use roof straps and surf racks as well.
