I have a male betta fish, and have had him for about a year now.I'm getting a bigger aquarium, and it's gonna be pretty empty with just my one betta fish in there all by himself.

My question is,can I put a female betta fish with a male betta fish?

Also, would putting goldfish be a bad idea?

What about other fish?

Like,algea eaters?

  1. You can't keep a male and female betta together except for a short time for breeding.  Goldfish are coldwater fish and betta's need 80F temps.

You could try putting a small school of tetra's in the tank with your betta.  Better if you add the tetra's first so the betta doesn't get territorial.  Some betta's tolerate other fish in the tank and some will kill them.  You won't know until you try it.

  2. you shouldnt put them together unless u want to breed them. i tried putting my male and female togther and a week later their fins were shredded and bite wounds all over. it was very sad.

but you can put other fish in their with him. it also depends on wat size tank you are getting. if u have a 10 gallon i would suggest to get 3 cory catfish and maybe a couple female mollies. just make sure no fin nipping fish because that will result in an ugly sick looking betta fish.

    good luck!

  3. bettas are tropical fish so do not put goldfish with them bettas need a heated tank

you should not put a female with the male as they may kill each other

    see www.bettatalk.com

    breeding bettas

several other tropical fish will do fine with the betta depending on the size of the new tank rember the new tank must cycle the best and fastes way to do this is to use the gravel from the old tank without washing or reinceing it

  4. no only for a short period of time for breeding dont try it

also bettas are tropical (need a heater to live a happy healty life)

so of coarse you cant put them with goldfish (coldwater)

  5. you would want to put a few females in if you r going to keep them in because he will harass them constantly and if he does it too much to one female it could kill her. but if you dont want several females you could consider other fish. but they must be peaceful and not very colorful. here is a compatibility chart-http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/fwcom...

  6. i wouldnt put a female and a male together

and no i wouldnt want to put a gold fish with it because it cold water and a betta is warm

so id put 3 green cory cats

    and to otto cats

im guessing its a 10gal tank so there

  7. well it maters what kind of fish it is i think yes I'm a scientist

  8. You can only put a male betta and a female betta together for a very short time, for breeding. Also, you can't mix goldfish with other fish because the release a toxic chemical which is fatal to other fish that are not goldfish. I'm not sure about other fish. I wouldn't though. They will probably fight.

  9. Short answer is yes, you can put a male betta with a female betta. I am not so sure that you can put a goldfish in the tank because betta fish tend to be fin nippers and I don't think the goldfish would be a good idea. You can put an algae eater but just make sure that it is around the same size as the betta. With other fish, just make sure that they aren't fin nippers because the betta may have a tough time defending itself. A good fish to put with bettas are Zebra Danios and Assorted Platies. With algae eaters, don't get a chinese algae eater, they are very agressive. Feed freeze dried bloodworms twice a week and tropical flakes every day.

If I were you though, I would keep bettas in one tank because they perfer a different type of food than tropical fish. You can have a male with as many as six females and there are many types of bettas. Check Petco.com, in the fish section, under live fish and rock, under freshwater fish. Still feed them bloodworms twice a week and designated betta food every day.

    Hope this helps
