  1. Please be more specific.  Most pet stores don't sell salt water plants so where are you getting it from and what kind of plant is it?  What kind of freshwater fish do you have and what is the purpose of putting plants with them.  Is is to feed the fish, provide hiding places or do you just like the look of the plant?  Is it a plastic or artificial salt water plant?  Is it a plastic plant that was used in a salt water tank that you want to use in a fresh water tank now?  All plastic plants made for aquariums can be used in either freshwater or saltwater aquariums.  Some plastic plants may be too sharp for some types of fish.  More information is needed to be able to answer your question properly.

Ok, you say the plant is from the ocean.  Where do you live?  What ocean is this plant from?  I live in San Diego, California, USA so my ocean is the Pacific.  Kelp is commonly found here but I don't know where you are from.  You could try a piece of your plant in your tank and see if the fish like munching on it but don't expect it to grow.
