Question:

Can I put a window air conditioning unit into a garage with no windows somehow?

I'm trying to cool my garage without hiring a carpenter to build windows. I know window units need to "breathe" and will drip a little, but I think I could fabricate something for the transfer. Any ideas?

  1. Sure, you simply need a cutout in the wall that is the size of your window unit.

Try framing out your rectangular cutout with 2x4s from the inside.

If you have vinyl or aluminum siding, you might also consider purchasing some J-Channel to outline the cutout from the exterior, to collect and re-direct rainwater drainage.

Seal any gaps with expanding foam (name brand: "Great Stuff")  and/or exterior caulk.

Be sure you have the proper electrical connections in place before jumping in!

    Good Luck

  2. You can look into getting an air conditioner that don't require a window.  Here's a couple links:

    Good luck and keep cool!

  3. no i dont think so. if you are hot, than just use a portable fan thing. sorry if that didnt help. good luck!!!

  4. yes just open the door enough to put the air conditioner into and get some cardboard and tape and fill in to the holes with the tape and cardboard.

  5. Pretty easy. Frame an opening that's the height of the air conditioner into your wall with 2x4s, then cut that section of wall out and insert the Ac.

Air conditioners work by blowing the hot air out of the window and the cool air in, so just setting the thing into your garage without outside venting will have no effect other than wasting electricity.

You can, however, also get a different type of ac that only requires a hose going to the outside to blow the hot air out.

It may give you a better solution because it would only require you to put a small vent hole into your wall instead of a large opening.

  6. What you could do is fabricate a boxed frame to hold the window A/C and mount that to the wall inside your garage. Then on the outside wall simply cut in a louvered opening to allow air to enter. You would have to enclose the box and insulate it. You would also want the interior of the box to be able to drain away and condensate.

  7. Sure.  Cut the hole, and then frame it in with 2X4's  You can probably s***w the flange into the new framing, so no chance of it falling anywhere.

  8. Yeah,  a lot of people do it. Cut a hole, stick it in, plug it in, turn it on. Make sure you prop it up in the back so it won't fall out, though.

  9. Just cut out a square between the studs, Like you would if you were installing a window and put in with a brace on the outside and put a nice molding on the inside, I,ve had it done( make sure an outlet is very close, You can tap from the nearest outlet or run a new line)

  10. you could buy yourself one of those  portable standing units, I have seen them in the Summer Sale catalogue at Sears a 12,0000 BTU unit is listed at $649.99 CDN at the moment.

    Please note :

The portable unit stands on the floor not in the window .
