Question:

Can I put my amphibians together?

I have 2 African dwarf frogs, 2 snails and a stick of lucky bamboo, all together in a tank. I just purchased a baby water turtle and need a new place for him. Could I put all of them together in a larger tank? Keep in mind the turtle is going to need a light and lamp, rocks... etc. I’m not sure about a real plant with the turtle. I also have a male betta, he was very vicious to a female betta but I wonder if he will be alright with them as well?

PS how can I tell if my turtles and frogs are male/female?

  1. If you put the turtle with the other animals he WILL eat them. Aquatic turtles look at those things as food.

Males bettas should not be with any other bettas, including females unless they are ready to breed.

Your turtle is too small to tell if he is male or female.

  2. Yea, the turtle will eat them, but the betta can go in there. Also, never put bettas together unless you have 3+ females in a 10+ gallon tank! The frogs, snails and betta would do well in a 5 gallon tank. The turtle needs a tank to himself, he dirtys the water worse than goldfish and will eat anything he can fit in his mouth!

Also, there is no way to tell if a small turtle is malt of female, plus we need to know the species of turtle. forgs are much easyer! The males are smaller than females, and in the armpit area of a male dwarf frog there is a big white bump. Pretty hard to miss!

  3. 1.  Yes, you can keep your amphians together.

    2.  Turtles are not amphibians, but reptiles and these enjoy meaty diets such as fish, frogs, insects, and most other critters.

2.1.  Putting the turtle with your Betta would undoubtedly be a good way to get revenge on the Betta for his acts of domesitc violence.

3   Turtles will make your take very dirty and smelly in a very short time.  To keep the water clean for the longest time, they should be removed for their meals.

4  As turtles do enjoy a nice basking under a heat lamp, and need it, the lamp would raise the water temp too high for the other critters to remain alive long.

4,1  Maximum size for male red eared sliders, which is probably what you have, is about 12".  So, they require a larger tank.  Larger is a relative term.   There's a good possibly your "larger" tank would still not be large enough.

    5.  The bamboo should be okay with the turtle.
