Question:

Can I put my parakeets on the back porch?

I'm new at this. Weather permitting, could I put their cage out on the back porch, out of direct sunlight? Is there any possibility that they'll get sick, disease, anything from being outside? I just love them and wouldn't want anything to happen to them?

  1. Putting them on the veranda is a great idea, however you do need to be careful.

The sights and sounds, fresh air and sun light will be really good for them.

Direct sunlight is actually needed for birds, but you have to make sure they have a shaded area to move into if they get too hot.

You need to make sure the cage is safe and should probably supervise your birds while they're outside. Animals and other birds can attack the cage and harm the birds.

Your birds could catch worms and possibly some diseases (depending what is in your area) off other wild birds. However they are unlikely to catch anything unless the other birds come right up to them. Because wild bird aren't likely to come that close to you house, it should be fine.

They are very hardy birds so being outside will be very good for them and also lots of fun. Do a bit of research on the internet and I'm sure you'll find lots of useful information.

    Good luck!

  2. Well, I have 4 parakeets and when I got them the store people said direct sunlight and even small gusts of wind could make them sick. They also told me that parakeets prefer room temperature the best. Hope this helped!!!

  3. Be sure to keep them out of direct sun- it can kill them.

    Enjoy your lovely birds!
