Question:

Can I put new milk in an unwashed old milk carton?

The other day I was carrying my milk into the apartment and I dropped it on the ground. The bottom split open so I put it in the sink and found last weeks (or two weeks ago) milk carton that was empty and waiting to be thrown away. I rinsed out the old one with water a couple of times but no soap was involved. I poured the new milk in and am now drinking it.... Can I get sick from this?

  1. Unless you want contaminated milk i would suggest you wash it out real good with hot water a little soap and 1 cap full of bleach  rinse out well with hot water and let drip dry

  2. if you want cheese

  3. As long as you rinsed it out well, it should be fine.  Just keep your nose and taste buds handy whenever you pour some out to drink.  You did use hot water, right??

  4. Probably not.  The worst thing that could happen is that the milk might spoil sooner because the old carton wasn't clean.  Milk always contains bacteria, it is just that when pasteurized, there aren't enough to spoil the milk before most people get around to drinking it.   Spoiled milk starts to smell different when it is going bad.  And even such milk can still be consumed.  Buttermilk is simply milk that has curdled, which it will if enough lactobacilli are present.  Buttermilk is consumed without ill effects.   Indeed you can buy it in the grocery store.   Yogurt also contains lots of lactobacilli, which is what they call "live cultures".  Under normal circumstances even if milk is turning, it can still be consumed without problems, unless of course you have a milk allergy.

  5. was the old mike carton sitting out for more then a day? I wouldn't risk it. take to busted carton back to the store along with proof of purchase tell them you dropped it and if it's a stand-up kind of store they may replace it for youy. if not just buy a new carton. why chance getting sick. have you ever thrown up milk?  you get cottage chesse. yuck

  6. Probably not.

You rinsed it out, and the milk in it wasn't bad anyways.

So I say you should be ok.

  7. it is possible that you can get sick, bcuz the tap-water you rinsed the carton with, along with the old milk, equals contamination.  i suggest drinking alot of purified water to flush out your system.

  8. If you rinsed it out well and it didn't smell bad, it's probably ok.
