Question:

Can I put salt water rocks in with my red ear sliders?

I have 3 red ear sliders and I decided I want rocks, (the size of quarters) on the bottom of my tank insted of the small fish gravel stuff. I was wondering if I could use rocks from the beach insted of buying them. Thanks!

  1. You could, provided that you sanitize them and wash off the salt. Personally, I prefer a minimalist approach. If it isn't absolutely needed, don't put it in. Rocks make it toughter to clean the tank and, unless one is used for basking (inefficient), serve no useful purpose.

  2. You could use rocks from the beach as long as you clean them well. First rinse them in water with a little bleach, then rinse them again in fresh water. I would strongly suggest boiling the rocks too. Make sure to avoid any rocks that will dissolve or leach minerals into the water- basically no sandstone or limestone.
