Question:

Can I put two small double finned goldfish in a tank with my male or female betta?

I just bought two small orange and white double finned goldfish, I don't know what kind they are but they are alittle different in size and in looks. I have a medium sized tank that I housed my male betta in for awhile. Im not sure what size the tank is but it has a little sticker that says 49MHz. The betta bit the smaller goldfish under its eye & its eye started bleeding. I removed the betta. Is there any way I can put the goldfish in the tank with him or can I place them with my female betta? And please name all the types of double finned goldfish. Thanks. :]

  1. Beta are very aggressive, they have to be alone.

  2. Its not true that bettas kill other fish.  They can live with larger calm fish that don't fin nip.  However, they can't live with goldfish.  Goldfish produce mass amounts of ammonia that most other fish can't handle.  If you put the betta with goldfish, it will probably kill the goldfish because of how messy the goldfish are.  And bettas are tropical fish requiring warmer tempatures, and goldfish are cold water fish and require cooler tempatures.  They require different diets and habitats.

  3. goldfish cant go in with bettas, goldfish of that type need 10 gallons each.

there are Fantails (look a bit like single tails but with double)

orandas (same larger bellies grow head growths)

pealscales (very large bellies look like golf balls and pearl scales lol)

    ranchu (no top fin)

there are more but your goldfish will probebly fall into one of those catagories. probebly fantail as they're more common most of the time and it sounds like one.

    good luck=]

  4. You cannot put any other fish in with beta

  5. Depending on your tank size (not sure from the descpition), But Betta and Goldfish do not belong together for a couple of reasons.

First off, it sounds like your goldfish are Fantail goldfish.  There is a variety of Goldfish out there...so they could be Fancy, or even Orandas.  Fantails can grow up to 8 inches and a little more. Male Bettas can be agressive to other fish with long fins and color (and usually are).  There is the problem.  Bettas can go great in Community Tanks with the right mixture of fish...but not Gourami, Long finned fish with color (iffy), and other Male Bettas.  Also your Fantails will need a lot of room when they get bigger.  Some species of Goldfish get up to 2 feet...the fantails usually stay within 10 inces...but ya never know.  Either way, have lots of room for them and a great filter.

The second problem is your Betta is a warm water fish and actually do better in warm water up to 80 degrees and around that.  Goldfish are coldwater fish and do great in cold water...under 74 degrees is hitting on the higher side for these guys...colder is better...in the 60s to low 70s.  They go nuts sometimes in warmer water.

Also Goldfish put out a lot of waste and therefore need great filtration.

Female Bettas are a lot more docile and thrive with lots of plant cover...however, again...this is a warm water fish and not good with mixture of cold water.  The other thing...even if you had a female betta...could be a victim once the goldfish grow.  They are opportunic eaters and will eat anything that will fit into their mouths...including smaller fish.

My suggestion...make a decision on what type of tank you want.  Cold water or Warm water.  Either way, do not mix these fish.

    Best of Luck!

  6. I have kept female bettas with my bubble eyes for over a year with no problems. A friend of mine kept bettas with Pearlscales and Lionheads, also with no problems.

Bettas are tropical though, so make sure the water temperature is fairly high (80s). The goldfish are too big (even when young) for the bettas to harass.

Any goldfish with a wild-type body (Commons, Shubunkins or Comets) may be a danger to bettas. But exotic goldfish should live with them just fine.

  7. it depends on your betta temperment

i have five female bettas in a ten gallon tank that are as mellow as they can be i'd put goldfish in there just watch out for the double finned one bettas get aggressive with fish that have bigger fish then they do

  8. No they will kill any other fish
