Question:

Can I put up no parking signs in my own neighborhood?

My SUVs are too large for our driveway so we park on the street directly infront of our house. The problem is that our pothead neighbors park infront of our house instead of theirs. Just to be jerks. Can we put up no parking signs in our front yard? There is a strip of grass between the sidewalk and the edge of the street and we want to put two there. It's very frustrating because there is no where else for us to park except infront of our own house. It wouldn't be a problem except that there are never cars infront of our house. And if they have parties in the middle of the night, someone over there will park half-blocking our driveway (which I know is illegal.)

  1. I have the same parking problems as you do, you could put up signs but they arent enforced by law so they really mean nothing. The problem is that that piece of land is still owned by the town/city so you cant really do anything about it, atleast that is the way it is in New York and I presume most other places, I know it sucks but if you put up the signs maybe they will listen to them or if you must ask them to please not park there anymore, good luck!!

  2. No.

Your only recourse is to politely ask them to not park in front of your house. If you are asking about parking on the boulevard (the grassy area between the curb and the sidewalk), that is generally illegal in most places. Consult your local council/zoning board about possibilities. Other than that, no offence, but if you can afford two obscenlely overpriced gas guzzlers, you should be able to afford to widen your driveway.

As for finding someone parked half across your driveway... Have them TOWED.

    Good Luck!

  3. The problem doesn't seem to be your neighbors cars,  it seems you don't have enough driveway.

Only the city or county traffic authority can put up enforcable signage,  usually after an ordinance is passed.   Also,  if enforcable,  even your vehicles could be towed.   You can put the signs up in your yard,  not on the parkway,  but they would be meaningless.

Try smaller vehicles or enlarging yoru driveway.    Also,  when they block your drive,  ask once politely to have it moved,  then call the police.    If this doesn't work,   start taking the valve stem cores from thier tires when they park there.

  4. no. unless it truly is in your yard. since you do not own that street you can't. the sign could say please dont park here but you cant say no parking. becuase it is now your own possesinon unfortunatly you cant tell people what to do. sorry

  5. Next time they block your driveway, get em towed. That will teach them and i don't think the sign thing is legal since the street is public, but on your grass you could probably put a sign that says: If you block this driveway, you will be towed...

If they are really being a problem, I would call the cops next time they have a party.. but you might want to just call the city and find out if the sign thing is legal.

  6. You can only put up no parking signs on your private property. Only the city can post no parking signs on public streets.

If the signs say no parking, how would you be able to park there?

  7. You have no right to claim part of the street, especially since you have a driveway.  Street parking is first come first served.  If your SUVs are too big for your driveway, that is your problem, nobody else's.  Why not park in front of their house if they are in front of yours?

  8. Hello,,no, but you can put a "stay off the grass"sign in your own yard. You could widen your driveway so you keep your vehicles safer,,blocking your driveway is not legal so you can have them towed,,but what do you really want to prove??

  9. You can put whatever you want in most cases in your own yard but no in the street.

This is the same question asked before with the potheads and if you dont get the police involved you are going to have alot of problems.

If they cannot do anything for you then you will have to either live with it or contact your local city manager.......

  10. The only people that can put up enforceable 'no parking' signs is the bylaw department of your city or town.  You do not own the road and thereby have no right to it.  The strip of grass as you call it, or boulevard as it is known, is owned by the city.  Therefore it is their property.  You may not park your vehicles on it either, as per bylaw.

If by chance, someone is blocking your access to your driveway, you may call police or bylaw enforcement and they will deal with it.  Either by forcing the owners to move it, or having it towed.

If your vehicles are too much for your driveway, then consider expanding your driveway, or stop complaining.  When you are forced to park on the street, it is 'first come - first park' so to speak.  You have no legal rights to the roadway in front of your house.

  11. If they are blocking your driveway, then call the police and get them to issue a citation. Otherwise, there's nothing you can do.  It's a public street, and people can park anywhere they want.

  12. You could but what might end up happening is the towing company would tow your car. 2nd is dont worry about the parties if you dont even use the driveway!
