Can I qualify for corrective eye sugery?

Hi, I'm only 16 right now but I'm considering laser eye surgery once I reach my 20's. My eye-sight is pretty bad: -6.50 in my left along with mild astigmatism and -7.00 on the other (probably worse now, about to have my annual eye exam). I don't have any other health/eye problems.

Do I qualify for eye surgery? Is there like a limitation on how bad your eye-sight can reach before surgery is no longer possible? And how do I prevent it from getting progressively worse?

  1. Laser surgery has come incredibly far in the last several years, making it an option for most people with even severe vision problems. By the time you are 20, they will probably be doing even more progressive procedures. I had lasik done 3 years ago, and it's the best money I've ever spent. I have not had any problems, and have even forgotten what it was like to be a slave to glasses and/or contacts!! I'd say start saving your money, and make it a plan!

  2. yes, you can qualify for lasik once your eye sight becomes stable, meaning that it hasn't changed in the past year or two.

i had worse eyesight than you when i was 16, about -8 and -9, but once i readed my early 20's it started to settle down at -10, and i was able to get lasik without a problem.  although, i do have to go for another round to make one eye 20/20, but it's still better than ever.

i think the limit is -12 or so... way higher than yours right now... so as long as your cornea's thick enough and your eyes aren't too too dry, you'll probably qualify.

i don't know about the prevention... maybe eat carrots or take some lutein?  i dont' think either will work miracles, but they'll help your eyes be healthy
