Question:

Can I "stop off" mid-way through a journey on a saver return ticket?

I have a saver return ticket, the return leg is valid from Huddersfield to London Terminals.

On this ticket, can I get a train from Huddersfield to Manchester Piccadilly, then a train to Crewe, stop off in Crewe for a few hours then get a train from Crewe to London? Or does it have to be a continuous journey?

  1. Yes you can. A "break of journey" is allowed on the return half of a Saver ticket. This means you can get off at any intermediate station, and resume your journey later, provided that the ticket is valid via that station.

Note that you do not have to resume your journey on the same day. The return halves of Savers are valid for a period of one month, and you can start, break, and resume your journey at any time within that validity period.

For example, there would be nothing to stop you staying in Crewe for a few days if you wanted to, so long as the ticket is still valid when you do resume your journey.

  2. Firstly you need to determine whether Manchester is a valid via point for a journey from Huddersfield to London Terminals (I believe it is). This can be done by visiting the ATOC site: http://www.atoc.org/rsp/Routeing_Guide.a... (you need to allow javascript and pop-ups for this to work properly). It's hellishly complicated though!

Secondly, taking a break on the return journey is valid as long as it continues the same day. That's in general; your particular ticket may have other conditions.
