Can I re-teach myself to play guitar?

A couple years ago i took lessons for about a year, then my teacher quit and i just never got more lessons. Every once and a while i'd pick up my guitar and play what i know, but now i really want to learn again and be good. Right now i know some basic chords like A, C, D, E, and G, but im still having trouble with B and F, and i know the basic power chords. Is there anything you would suggest that would help me? What else should i be teaching myself? Or is it no use trying to teach myself, do i need a teacher?

  1. There's no reason you can't teach yourself, but the danger there lies in that if you make a mistake and don't realize it, there won't be someone there to correct you.

Since you've already had a teacher, you are probably better off than someone like myself who got a guitar and tried to learn on their own. I just flat out don't know how to do certain things and there is no one to tell me, so I am faced with a lot of trial and error.

You already have the basics, so while it may take a little longer, there's no reason you can't practice on your own and get better. There are a lot of very good guitar players who are self-taught.

  2. If Pat Martino did it, you can do it. See his bio:

How much do you want to play? Enough to teach yourself?

    Good luck~

  3. Just wanting to is a good sign.  I'll supply you with what you need.  The rest is up to you.  Good luck.
