Can I really get botulism from tomato sauce that goes bad?

  1. Botulism is a soil based disease that is why we are advised not to leave garlic sitting in oil without refrigeration. Also why babies under a year old aren't supposed to eat strawberries or honey. The berries because they are close enough to the ground to get contaminated by the soil and the honey because of the pollen. A high bacteria count when food starts to turn can cause stomach distress. It is unlikely a cooked tomato sauce would contain botulism. Raw products with tomatos and hot peppers that you might use in salsa have been linked with salmonella recently.


  2. I dont think so but it will give you a bad case of gas, people in other countries ferment potatoes, etc to get alcohol,  so I think you will just have a tummy ache.
