Question:

Can I really trust my HR manager?

I need to tell her that I am pregnant (I'm 9 weeks already) but I don't want her telling my boss yet. My boss has been looking for a reason to get rid of me, and used me asking for a raise while she was out on vacation as a reason to right me up. Now I am nervous that if I tell my HR lady she will tell my boss and I will get fired (for some other made up reason, so I can't sue). What should I do?

  1. Pray about it

  2. You should be able to trust her professionalism - but you know her better than we do.  Keep in mind that you may need some type of accommodation from your company (coming in late, doctor's appointments etc) and should you not let HR know about this you could face corrective action based on not being at work.  I would be tempted to say talk to your HR person and let them know your concerns about your boss and your situation.  You may be happily surprised.

  3. HR professionals are suppose to be a source where employees can engage in confidential matters.  If your HR department isn't held withtrust, you're working for the wrong companhy anyway.

Labor laws are very protective to employees for wrongful discharge. Do everything asked of you within your job duties, keep your attendence clean and you should be ok. If your boss is looking for a reason to fire you, find out why and DOCUMENT EVERYTHING after you get home. Dates, times and events. EVERYTHING.

If the sad event happens where you get fired for whatever reason you claim your boss makes a reason up, with respect, ask your boss one question as you take your final paycheck....."are you sure you want to do this?" FYI , a employer induced separation requires the employer to have your final pay in your hands on the last day. If not, they're violating yet another labor law.

One very important element.........no employer can legally fire you because you ask questions or raise issues not liked by you manager. If so, you have a good case for wrongdful discharge.  DOCUMENT EVERYTHING NO MATTER HOW TRIVIAL YOU THINK IT IS. If it wasn;t written down, it wasn't said.
