  1. You sure can.  HDV tapes are miniDV tapes.

Little Dog is only half right.

Different companies use different formulas and material to make their tapes.  Between different companies, there are differences in the exact makeup of the tape, but most companies use some kind of Metal Evaporated material.

Within a company, there is not much difference between the miniDV and HDV tapes.  For example:  The Panasonic HDV tapes are made from the same exact process at their miniDV tape.  They are made on the exact same line in the same factory.  The HDV tapes are merely 2-3 times thicker and have 2 or more recording layers as opposed to the thin single layer consume tape you find at Wal-Mart and other stores.

You can use miniDV tapes in an HD camcorder, and you can use HDV tapes in an SD camcorder.   They are interchangeable.  The HDV tapes are just designed to handle a lot more use and survive longer storage in much more harsh conditions.

Also, we have mixed brands of tape without problems.  If it becomes a problem, it is because you are filming in a dirty area or you are re-using tapes too much or a combination of both.

  2. Yes, you can use "normal" miniDV tapes in your miniDV tape based high definition camcorder.

I own/use a Sony HDR-HC1 and Sony HDR-FX1. I use the Sony Premium tapes that are around $3 each. I never reuse tapes. I have never had a drop-out or problem with a tape after almost 7 years of using miniDV tape.

The "HD premium" tapes have a different oxide fomulation - if you are a pro, this migh make a difference to you.

Once you pick a tape brand and manufacturer, stick with that tape through the life of the camcorder...
