I now understand that I need a tv capture card to watch and record tv on my laptop, and where I will also be able to pause live tv. Can I switch using this card between my laptop and tv and record and pause from either? Also will I be able to receive all the cable channels that I am getting now from my cable provider?

  1. If you keep unplugging and replugging, you may cause some damage to the card (static) - also it will drive you nuts, cause it will always be in the wrong place.

You will only be able to record the cable channels if they are sent out from your cable box in a form that will connect to your card - RF or component form - if your "TV card only accepts 'direct from the air' signals, then you will need to have the signal "RF encoded" so the card will accept it - if the card also accepts 'video component' then ok.
