I'm married, but filled my 2007 taxes separetly. Now I owe the IRS and want to refile as married and get the refund I deserve. Am I able to do that? Do I pay any fees? Can I do it myself, even though I had them professionaly done at first?

  1. yes. yes. submit Form 1040X. Forms and instructions at www.irs.gov

Coumn A= figures from one original return.

    Column C= new figures.

Column B= difference between the two columns.

You will find it helpful to complete a new 1040 as MFJ as a worksheet to copy the corrected figures to Column C. Allow 8-12 weeks for processing.

  2. Yes you can amend your return to go from separate to joint 0 you can't go the other way on it.  Did your spouse file also?  You'll need both signatures on the amendment.

An amendment won't change your stimulus payment, but if it gives you a bigger reFUND, you'll get that.

There are no fees to file an amendment.  You are allowed to do it yourself.

  3. If you are changing from a separate to a joint return and your spouse did not file an original return, enter your name and SSN first.

Changing from separate to a joint return.   If you and your spouse are changing from separate returns to a joint return, follow these steps.

Enter in column A the amounts from your return as originally filed or as previously adjusted (either by you or the IRS).

Combine the amounts from your spouse's return as originally filed or as previously adjusted with any other changes you or your spouse are making to determine the amounts to enter in column B. If your spouse did not file an original return, include your spouse's income, deductions, credits, other taxes, etc., to determine the amounts to enter in column B.

Read the instructions for column C on this page to figure the amounts to enter in that column.

Both of you must sign Form 1040X.

Joint and several tax liability.    If you file a joint return, both you and your spouse are generally responsible for the tax and any interest or penalties due on the return. This means that if one spouse does not pay the tax due, the other may have to.
