I am a Hawaii resident, who is in school in New York, with a car I bought and registered for a year while at school in Utah. Is it possible to register my car in Hawaii if I don't plan to return to Utah or stay much longer in New York?

  1. yes of course.  NYS would love to get your money.

But you might have to also get NYS license.  I know that when I was living in Maui, I didn't have to get a Hawaii license first.  But each state is different.

    Good Luck...

    P.S  I live in NYC.

  2. I don't see why not.since you are a resident of Hawaii in the first place. In most states you have to be a resident of that state for a certain time. As, a student it would be difficult to change your resisdency to another state since you are not actually a resident of that state. One thing is since you are no longer in Utah you do need to register it either in New York where you are living now or your home state Hawaii.

  3. You may have to take your car to the state that you register it in. I know that even to renew registration in California, you have to take your car back to California for the proper inspections. So, from my experience (with a permanent address in a different state than my car registration) it's easiest to register your car where you are at. If they require proof of residency, most states accept bills or bank/credit card statements, or a copy of your lease.
