My and my fiance and I just bought a new car - the title and insurance is in his name. Can I go get it registered or does he need to be there?

  1. You can.  But I'd bet your fiance isn't the legal owner.  You probably financed it, and the lienholder is the legal owner.

  2. I believe he needs to be there since the title is in his name.  He will need to provide his drivers lisence as an id to prove that it is him that owns the car.  You could try calling your local DMV to find out as well.  Each state may be different but am not really sure.

  3. If you and your fiance "just bought a new car", why aren't you on the title and insurance?  I doubt the state will allow you to register the car without your fiance.  Legally, it is his car.  You can't go get a copy of his driver's license, why should they allow you to register his car?  And if it's a new car, why didn't the dealership send in the registration paperwork?  They normally do that for you...

  4. The registration needs to match the title and insurance so it needs to be in his name.

Since the car is not in your name you cannot register it. He has to.

  5. Literally you didn't buy the car. He did and it is his responsibility to register and insure it.

  6. I'm pretty sure he'll have to go, and it is sooooo wrong to buy a car together, UNLESS you are married.

If it doesn't work out, and he kicks you to the curb, he keeps the car, so I wouldn't put too much of your money into it, since you'll just be throwing money away.

You might check with the BMV to be sure, but without an affidavit, you may not be able to get on the title.

Who got the loan or who paid for it? You or him?
