We have an add on to the back of our house. This means the previously external window is now internal. The glass has already been removed but the vertical wooden frame that would separate the 2 frames of glass still remains. I want to saw this out so it will open the view from the kitchen to the back room but would this in anyway jeopardize the structure of the wall??

  1. A window is not considered a structural item, so removing it will not compromise the structure. An exterior window frame fits between jack studs and fits underneath a header. As long as these structural elements remain in place the wall will be strong whether or not it contains the window. In the following article, check drawing #3 to see what I'm talking about:

In some cases, multiple windows placed side by side may have structural framing between them but if you're talking about a single window that won't be a factor.
