Question:

Can I remove trade-in on a contract once signed?

My wife signed a contract with an auto-dealer for a new car. The car wasn't on the lot so they had to factory order it. We agreed on the total price of the car and I am still happy with the price but we had a trade-in as well that I feel did not get a good price so I would like to try and sell it privately. When the car arrives to the dealer and we show up without the trade-in, will there be a problem? I read through the contract and it doesn't mention anything about this but I can't imagine a dealer is going to turn away a customer with a check in his hand right? I know though that they didn't make much if a profit since I got the GM supplier discount. Thanks

  1. They need to sell them more than you need to buy them. If you don't buy a new car.....so what.....if they don't sell them they don't eat, I'm pretty sure they will work with you...if not go elsewhere.

  2. You can try, but what if the situation was the other way around?  Would you just write off the cost of the trade-in?

If they aren't making much profit on the sale of the new car, they're not going to give away the trade-in.  Why wouldn't they turn you away?  You're trying to take away from their already small profit.

You signed a legal contract. If you don't show up with the trade-in, they can either add the amount they were giving you for the trade-in to the cost of the new car, or tell you to get a lawyer.

Be friendly and ask to talk to the financial dept.  You can probably keep the trade-in, but the new car will cost that much more.
