Can I rent/buy a trailer to tow a 42 foot sailboat? It's an empty hull so it only weighs 5000lbs or so.?

If not, is there any place that could possibly tow it for me for under 2,000?

I have a truck fully capable of pulling 10,000lbs. So truck is not an issues, only the trailer and length of the boat seems to be stumping me.

  1. Check with your local marinas.  They may have a trailer you could rent or may offer towing.  As for buying a trailer, a trailer to hold a 42 foot sailboat will be way over $2000.

  2. A few more questions need to b answered. What is the beam(width) and the keel? These will make a difference on the trailer and on the road rules. Probably even the empty hull of a 42 footer weighs more than 5000 pounds. 8 1/2 feet is the width allowed without permit. You also have a height problem if you do not remove keel or do not have a shallow keel. The truck towing capacity includes the weight of the trailer. You can not rent a trailer that has a gross weight of more than 10,000 pounds. Your boat and trailer will weigh more than that.
