Can I replace a Ni-CD 2/3AA 350mAh 8.4V battery for airsoft gun w/ somthn else 4 longer life/shorter recharge?

Can I replace a Ni-CD 2/3AA 350mAh 8.4V battery for my Crosman R71 Airsoft gun w/ something else for longer life/shorter recharge?

The battery that comes with the gun takes 4-6 hours per charge and *should* last 10min continuous shooting. It does not even come close. I'm sure that I could replace the battery with something that would be equivalent but with longer life, or maybe a nickel or lithium battery. I just don't know what specs I'd have to match.

Side note: The new battery does not necessarily have to fit in the plastic "magazine". I am not opposed to running a battery cable out of the magazine into a backpack or something.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
