Can I replace a tub without replacing the tiled walls?

I'm moving into a house where they remodeled the bathroom, but kept the old tub. The tub is stained and I'd like to replace it with a new one, but I love the tile work on the walls and don't want to replace that.

  1. You will probably damage some of the bottom tiles while removing the tub and installing the new one. Make sure you have replacement tiles that match exactly.

  2. Partualy yes but you will still have to replace some tiles. Good luck.

  3. You will have to remove the bottom row of tile to get the old tub out.

  4. I doubt it. You may get away with only having to replace the bottom ones and that's if your careful.

  5. You will probably wind up damaging or destroying the tiles right above the tub and around the faucets so make sure you will be able to replace THOSE tiles.

  6. There are three ways to tackle this problem.

    1) Remove just enough tile around the perimeter of the tub to allow removal of the tub and installation of the new tub. Ideally you'd replace the tiles with new ones to match the existing, but that can be tough, particularly if the tiles are unusual or old.  If you can't find matching tiles, maybe you can install new tiles of a different shape, size or color that would complement the existing work.

    2) Leave the tiles alone and refinish the tub.

    3) Leave the tiles alone and install a tub liner.

Here's some information about the latter two options:

  7. Probably not.  You may want to look at resurfacing the tub if the only real problem with it is stains.  Just a thought - it may be less expensive and if you find someone who is good it will look like new and your tiles will be intact.
