  1. Call the local embassy or US consulate.  They should be able to answer your questions.  See the link below.

But for the last one - the baby should get US citizenship right at the hospital, at the moment of birth.  Canadian too, I suspect.

  2. If your baby was born in canada its is canadian

  3. Hi again. Your baby will automatically be a Canadian citizen by virtue of being born there, so the birth certificate should be fine for trips to the US with his or her Canadian father and American mother.

If you want to document the kid's citizenship and get a US passport, the process is somewhat complicated. You need to get a Consular Report of Birth from the US embassy or consulate in Canada, and then use that along with the usual documents to get the passport. The State Department's web site explains all this pretty well.

  4. Your baby will be Canadian because of being born in Canada to a Canadian father.  Make sure to have the father listed on the birth certificate for this purpose.

In order to get US citizenship for your child you must go to the US consulate and apply for a Birth Abroad Certificate for your child.  In order to do this you will need your child's Canadian birth certificate and proof that one of the parents is a US citizen.

If you go to the US when your baby is only 1 month old you will likely not have time to do all of this before.  You have to wait on the Canadian bc and you also have to wait on the Birth Abroad too.  It takes about 3 months to get all this.  Just cross the border with your baby and show the birth certificate.  If the father is not with you then you must have a notarized letter from him stating that he knows you are crossing the border and taking his child into the uS.  This is to prevent kidnapping and child abduction at an international border (a serious crime).

The border will give you nothing as this is not their area of responsibility.

You can look up obtaining a Report of Birth Abroad on the  following website  www.amcits.com/birth_abroad.asp

I did all of this for my son who was born in Canada (I am American)  You can email me if you wish with more questions lonyad@yahoo.com
