I'm freaking out just hearing about that. I was raped and tortured for hours when I was a teenager and having my eyes taped shut would send me into a Anxiety Attack of a lifetime...God I hope I can refuse this!!! The surgery is 3 1/2-4 hours long under (against my wishes,) General Anesthesia. (female surgery.)

Please advise if you know if I can refuse this being done to me. I'm all ready legally blind in my right eye...so having dry eyes or a scratched cornea I can deal with...

  1. No, you can't.

Hospitals have regulations in order to protect all involved parties from harm.

Even if your eyes remained open, you wouldn't see anything while under general anesthesia, anyway.

You won't be violated. There are too many people in the OR-- you aren't alone with the surgeon.

Even if you woke up while your eyes were taped, you'd still be able to consciously open them; they use "paper tape" which can be released very easily.

  2. Best thing would be to ask the surgeon, if necessary explain why. I can see no reason why the would essentially need to be taped shut. Its not done all the time, its worth asking because they may not even have any intention of doing it. It might sound silly asking but people have questions and requests like this all the time, surgeons are usually very willing to accomodate.

  3. Most hospitals have rules, but most doctors will break the rules to comply with a patients wishes.  Even if you did have your eyes taped, you would never be aware of it.  They will tape them after you are asleep, and remove the tape before you wake up. Good luck and best wishes on the surgery!

  4. When they want to anesthetize you they are talking to you and asking friendly questions and let you breathe from a mask and when come back again you are in the recovery room. As easy as that!

When you have been anesthetized you don't feel the small sticky tapes helping you shut your eyes during surgery. (Size: 1x 0.5 cm) They are used to keep your eyes surface (Cornea) from drying as you wouldn't be blinking to keep your eye surface moist and also the drugs they use my further dry your eyes. So they are there for a good reason!
