I'm planning to drive to mexico tomorrow; however, I do not have a passport. I know that I am suppose to have a government issued photo ID AND my birth certificate, but I can't find my birth certificate. I do have a recently renewed driver's license. Is it possible to be able to return to america with just the license?

  1. Just how FAR do you plan to GO into Mexico.  If you are going over 25 miles past the border you will need ALL of your documents PLUS the documents for the car AND proof of MEXICAN INSURANCE... you DO know that... right?

Until June 2009 you can return to the U.S. with JUST a GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO ID... and a driver's license qualifies for that... but if  you are going further and plan to be gone a few days... you need to CLEAR IN at the Mexican border... pay the required fees and post the necessary bond.  If you don't play THEIR GAME... you can end up having your car IMPOUNDED and you completing your vacation IN A JAIL.

  2. I have been able to go in without a passport but it all depends on the customs agent you get. Some are more lenient then others. Expect to be asked alot of questions. Have your Social Security card or number memorized.

  3. you can. i do it all the time. the worst that will happen is they will pull you into customs and ask you a few questions.  only until july 2009  then you will need a passport. until then just an id will work.

  4. Of course not. Need both passport and driver's license.
