I have a 17amp 120v conveyor dryer that I want to run on a 15amp extension cord. Would this cause the cord to overheat and melt? Or is it safe to run for a few hours? The female end does not match the dryers male end I was just going to clip it and put a different adapter on it. Thanks!!

  1. Appliances should never be connected to an extension cord. This is why the receptacle and the plug do not match. NEC indicates that this type of appliance must have a plug and a circuit dedicated to it. Please check with your local electrician for help.

  2. Your 15 amp extension cord will eventually overheat and melt if used for a long time.Better buy a suitable cord for your appliance.

  3. You need not only a 20 amp cord but a 20 amp outlet. That is why the plug is different, it is a 20 amp plug. You don't see them very often. One prong is turned "sideways." A 20 amp outlet has one slot that is a sideways "T" shape so that it will accept either a standard plug or a 20 amp plug. Of course, 20 amp outlets are found only on 20 amp circuits with 20 amp circuit breakers. However, 20 amp circuits are not required to have 20 amp outlets they can have either 15 or 20 amp outlets.

This is what a 20 amp outlet looks like:
