Question:

Can I run my central air unit if the A/C compressor fan isn't moving?

Noticed this PM that my a/c compressor was making weird noise. Went out to look at it and noticed that while the unit was running and blowing cool air inside, the fan on the compressor wasn't turning. Called for service, but it is really hot tonight. Wondering if I can damage unit if I keep the AC on and the compressor runs without the fan?

  1. Anson had a good idea. But if you really need the ac get a large box fan and set it on the unit to air cool the coils unti repairman visit. Of course the risk to the compressor is still there with this patch.

  2. that wierd noise was your comressor telling you to shut it down, fans are cheaper than a compressor.you can still run it though, just stay out side and spray your hose on the coils,it should keep your house cool,to bad you will be busy cooling your coils

  3. YES YOU WILL RUIN YOUR A/C. TRY SPINNING THE FANS AND SEE IF YOU CAN GET IT TO RUN.

  4. It will burn up the comprassor. See if something is in the fan blade that's stopping it. If not you need a new fan motor.

  5. Sorry to tell you this, but you will probably burn the unit up.  Fans are for cooling the compressor while its running.  Try to look in there to see if something is blocking it from moving.  If it is, kill the power and unblock it.  Hope this helps!  Hope you stay cool!!!
