Question:

Can I run two networks; one static and one dynamic ip on one cable service?

I have an existing home network accessing the internet through a cable service using a dynamic ip address. I obtained a static address to setup a server. The server is temporary to run a demo of a software product. I discovered that if I plug my old router in, the dynamic address works, and if I plug the new router (with the server) the static address works.

Is it possible to setup a "Y" connection on the cable then two cable modems followed by a router on each, so I don't have to move all my home network stuff to the temporary server network?

I pay my original fee plus extra for the static ip.

  1. No, such a connection is not possible.  However, you can set up IP routing on the router/firewall with the static IP and forward certain ports (for email, www, etc.) to the home computer.

  2. It depends upon exactly what kind of service you have. There are three ways you can do it:

    1) If you have more than one static address, you can connect your new router to your cable service and connect your old router to your new router. Configure your old router to use one of your other static addresses. You can then connect dynamic devices to the old router and static devices to the new one.

    2) If you have only a single static address you can configure NAT and DHCP on whatever is configured at that static address.

    3) If you have only a single static address, you can configure a router to live at that one single static address and to provide dynamic addresses to other machines. The server that needs to be on a static address should be put on a static address inside your assignment range and use portforwarding on the route to allow people to access the service.

Give us some more details about whether you only have a single static address and what it is that needs a static address (what kind of services) and we can point you to more details.
