Can I setup a secure wireless network without a modem?

I want to setup a secure wireless network in my dorm room which only has a wired connection. I have connected an ethernet cable from the wired access point to my router. I have a wireless adapter in my laptop and I am able to connect to the Internet.

The only problem is that the wireless connection is unsecured and I want to name my network and be able to connect through my wireless router by using a password. I also want to make sure that other people in the dorm can access files or anything on my computer.

How can I do this using a simple Belkin wireless G router and Vista? Is this possible because I have tried everything and I cant get it to work.

Thanks!

  1. For belkin, type 192.168.2.1 in your web browser when connected to your belkin.

Login (default password is blank) and go to security to make a key. After that, go to channel and SSID to change your name.
