My husband wants me to purchase and send him an antenna for his laptop. So that he can pick up the Wifi signal from his room. However, in his welcome packet that he got before leaving, it has a list of things that we can't ship to him. "Computer peripherals" is one of those "Do not mail" items. What's a computer peripheral? Can I send the antenna or not?

  1. I wouldn't. and to be honest not even sure it would work

  2. you can send wifi antennas, i don't kow what a computer peripheral is, but my wife sent me tons of stuff, like microphones and webcams and thumb drives.

  3. You can ship most computer parts without any problem.  You can call your local post office to find out exactly what is restricted in Islamic countries.  However, you need to also consider his unit's policies for communications.  I'm assuming you are talking about a mobile broadband card since almost all modern laptops already have Wi-Fi built in and standard Wi-Fi wouldn't be in demand right now.  If not, correct me if I'm wrong.  The problem with those are the possible roaming charges with the company he is using (I know T-Mobile charges around $2.50 a minute for roaming in Iraq).  Also, some bases have cell phone jammers active to prevent the TCNs and LNs from using their cell phones while on base.  Some units prohibit the use of cell phones and include the mobile broadband cards with that restriction because they don't want you transmitting over Iraqi and Afghan communications.

  4. the reason they say that is because of the HIGH probability that it will be stolen.  such items are also used to create and detonate IEDs.

I'd be hesitant to tell you absolutely do NOT send it, though.  If you are willing to take the risk, I'd hedge the customs form a little..be vague but don't lie.  throw in a batch of cookies and list that.
