I am looking for a 38 special in a 1911 frame. But all I can find new is the 38 Super. And used is the old Colt target pistol but those are far and few in between. The question is, will a modern 38 super run a 38 special round?

  1. Colt had a .38SPL Wadcutter (HBWC 148gr.) model 1911-A1 decades ago but it did not work out too well.  The S&W Model 52 .38SPL automatiuc was far more reliable.   .38SPL is a rimmed revolver round that will not chamber in a .38 Auto chamber nor would it even fir into the magazine.

  2. No, they are NOT interchangable, and I've never heard of any .38 special caliber 1911's.

  3. No, a 38 super will NOT run 38 special rounds.  38 special is a rimmed round and much much longer, while the 38 super is really an improved 380, and rimless.

The only semiautos that I know of that can shoot 38 specials are  38 special target guns, but even then it is restricted to a very specific loading and bullet type.  Maybe a desert eagle chambered for 357 might be able to fire a 38 special but you'd have to hand-work the slide.

Anyways, those target 38 special guns can ONLY fire 38 special, and aside from Smith and Wesson making some, all the rest are going to be custom made. I know Clark Guns made some for bullseye shooting, but now they cost an arm and two legs.

The question is, why do you want a 38 special 1911?

  4. NO......

  5. No two very different cartridges.  The reverse a .38 super in a .38 spl will over pressure the firearm and go boom!

  6. The .38 super is designed for an automatic pistol and the .38 special is made for a revolver and the shell case has a rim on it where the .38 super doesn't and actually looks more like the 9mm luger here is a link that tells more about the .38 super: http://38super.net/Pages/Factory2.html

  7. No.  Look at the two rounds.  The .38 Super is semi-rimmed.  The .38 Special has a rim and is longer than the Super.  Guns are caliber specific.  Only use the ammo designated for your gun.
