Can I shop at the Commissary w/ my son's dependant ID card?

My son is two and a military dependant. His father and I were never married and I have custody. Obviously I do not have an ID, but can I use my son's to shop at the commissary (acting on his behalf). He isn't onld enough to take advantage of the benefir for himself. I think I should be able to since I am shopping to feed him. He card does say he has access to the NEX, MWR, and Commissary. I have tried to find this information online, but have not been able to. Has anyone else here been in this situation and know what the rules are. Or, can someone direct me to a wesite that has the answer?

  1. I highly doubt you could use it. I think they mean the access he has must mean for when he is old enough to go on his own as in teenager.

  2. no. your sons ID is for him to use and him only. There is no such thing as transferring privileges in the military. As someone mentioned before, the usual age is 10 when they first get their ID cards. your son obviously received his early, b/c his father is in the military and your son is his dependant. Not only are you not allowed to use it at the commissary, but you aren't allowed to use it at gas stations either. If ever caught trying to use your sons ID his privileges will be revoked and his sponsor (father) will have a lot of questions to answer.

  3. I think you have to be named the Child's Commissary Agent.  That should give you access.  Call a commissary or PX in your area and ask.

  4. No.  You have to have a military ID or dependent ID to get on base.  Period.  Unless you are being escorted by the baby's father.  Your son's ID card is probably for insurance purposes and such.

  5. I don't believe so.  Whoever is paying the bill usually has to have a military ID.

  6. Actually you can shop at the Commissary & Exchange as long as you are purchasing things for the child and not yourself. You would not be allowed to purchase things like alcohol and cigarettes, clothing for yourself, etc... Your child can also use CDC, MWR (ie swim lessons), etc.. as well because he is a dependent.

In order to do so you need a letter to go with that military ID card that allows you on base for the child.  It is something that the child's father will have to talk to JAG about getting.

  7. NWP is correct. . . you need what's called an agent's pass.  On AF bases, the DEERS office does them.   I don't know about the other services.   You normally get a pass for up to one year before you have to renew them.

Your son should not have commissary priviledges because he does not live in the sponsor's household. . . . unless they have changed the rules since I made IDs (very possible).    Your son is entitled to everything else though.

Contact your nearest DEERS office to find out how to get an agent's pass.

  8. u should call the commissary and ask

also, people take non-military members to the commissary to shop all the time even though you are NOT allowed to do that. Its obvious to the cashiers and yet they dont do anything.

  9. No you cannot. The only reason your son has an ID card at that age (normally it is 10 years for the first ID) is b/c children of single military or dual military have to have it in case of both parent(s) getting suddenly called away. The child has to have it in case a 3rd party has to escort them to the pre-designated child care provider. It is NOT so that the PX or commissary can be used.
