I want to lower the stem height on my road bike. There is a 1'' spacer located below the stem and a small 2mm one above it. Is it possible to simply relocate the spacers so that the 1'' spacer is above the stem?

If so, would the procedure be as follows:

1) Loosen the compression bolt (and remove it).

2) Loosen the stem and slide it off the headset.

3) Take off the lower spacer

4) Replace stem onto headset followed by the 1'' spacer

5) Tighten the compression bolt until there is no play

6) Center wheel and headset, then tighten stem.

Is this right?

thanks!

  1. Yes, but put the 2mm spacer on the bottom then the stem and

the 1" spacer.  You need that 2mm spacer.

If you want to go lower you could flip the stem over also.

  2. Yes sir, you are completely correct. Should only take you a few minutes.
